I haven’t thought about faith in great detail. My overall impression of what faith is was broad and somewhat vague. I considered faith to be more a religious word and concept even though I understood that it was also used in a non-religious way. I never thought of faith in terms of being a definition.The author’s detailed analysis is simple to understand and shows how faith is clearly defined by Hebrews 11:1. The author uses a variety of examples of faith (i.e. I have faith that flying is safe) and shows how to extract from the example the “substance of things hoped for” and the “evidence of things not seen”. I have to acknowledge that the author’s analysis works for a variety of religious and non-religious examples of faith and whenever I see the word faith in the bible.
I have also discovered with a typical example of faith that I cannot identify what is the “substance of things hoped for” and the “evidence of things not seen” using my long held concept of what I considered to be faith. I have to acknowledge that the author makes Hebrews 11:1 faith a very simple concept to understand. Extracting the “substance of things hoped for” and the “evidence of things not seen” is easy to do once I understood the definition. But I have to really think.
I understand why very few people understand Hebrews 11:1 faith. My mind understands how simple Hebrews 11:1 is. But my long held belief in what I understood faith to be is hard to shake. It will take awhile for me to comfortably think in terms of this new understanding.
This book is a must read if you really want to know what the words of Hebrews 11:1 really mean.

This is the first time I’ve read a book that is so clearly defines faith is just a few words. I have read a number of books trying to understand what people mean when they say they have faith. I formed a vague idea of what faith was from statements like “trust in God”, “having God in your life”, “putting God first in your life”, “believing without seeing”, “something to hold on to”, “trusting in something you don’t know will happen” and the list goes on. No one, especially the pastors use Hebrews 111 as their definition of faith. If they do, they give many examples of what they call faith and they tell you that these examples mean the words of Hebrews 111.
This book is different. It does the opposite of all explanations I’ve heard. It tells you what Hebrews 111 “substance of things hoped for” and “evidence of things not seen” say and then explains what the words actually mean. Many examples are giving that helped me understand those two phrases. After reading and understanding this book, I know EXACTLY what the "substance of things hoped for" is and I can also show anyone what the "evidence of things not seen" is. It’s not easy at first because it’s a new way of thinking.
The most interesting analysis is of “hope” and is difficult to make without the writer's engineering mind. It’s the everyday examples in life that are used that bring the points home for those of us who don’t have that analytical mind. The outstanding analysis is on the "evidence of things not seen”. It’s not what I’ve been told by pastors. Once those two phrases were clear, then I knew that Hebrews 111 was an amazing definition of faith because it works for both religious and non-religious uses of what I called faith. You will understand that faith is not a religious word. It is so easy to understand. Now when I see the word faith in the bible, I know how to identify the “substance of things hoped for” and the “evidence on things not seen”. It takes time to learn this new way of thinking. It’s not easy at first but the definition works every time. I now see how confused people are when they talk about faith. I can see clearly how they only think they have faith.
The purpose of this book was to show me the difference between the thinking of those who are lost and those who are saved. Now I understand that difference. All the books I’ve read in the past foster the vague understanding of faith. I really recommend you read this book if you’re serious about understanding what faith is.
The concept of faith taught by pastors and explained by friends has always been vague to me. It would always be religiously oriented. As a result, I used to think that faith was a religious word. It was after reading this book that I discovered it is simply a general word. When I first read the Hebrews 111 definition for faith, I had no idea what it said. I blindly accepted what I was told it said and never questioned it. I assumed those who told me what it said knew more than I knew. I accepted blindly what I was told was faith in it’s many vague variations and examples.
I had a “kind of understand” view of faith. It wasn’t until I understood the author's detailed analysis of Hebrews 111 that I realized the majority of people who talk about having faith have no idea what Hebrews 111 says. The analysis and numerous examples are reduced to a level of clarity that a mature child can understand. Once I was shown how simple the words of Hebrews 111 faith is, I was able to recognize that my bible study teacher didn’t understand it when he gave us what he considered to be an example of faith in one of our bible classes.
Sadly, I now realize that many pastors don’t understand the actual words of Hebrews 111 either. I now understand why the author says that only a few will take the narrow road to salvation. Those who take the broad road to destruction only think they understand faith. They need to read this book and see the analysis and how the author tests Hebrews 111 with the bible, with different denominational beliefs, with non-believers and his explanation works every time. You can see clearly when and why Abraham did and didn’t have faith.
I’ve learned how to identify “the substance of things hoped for” and “the evidence to things not seen” whenever people say they have faith. From what they say and what they do, I know whether they have blind faith which the “many” have or whether they have Hebrews 111 faith which is what the “few” who are saved definitely must have.
The author also cautions us to not think this is a cure all guarantee to heaven. Before my understanding, I thought I had faith in God according to the majority of my peers. When I finally understood Hebrews 111, I realized I did not have faith in God as I had believed. What I learned is if I really don’t know what God’s Hebrew 111 faith is, how can I exercise that faith?
You won’t regret reading this book. It has forced me to recognize how I’ve been deceiving myself in both religious and non-religious aspects of life dealing with faith. Even now, I struggle with my old understanding of blind faith. I hope this book helps you see the battles in your minds to want to embrace blind faith instead of Hebrews 111 faith. This book shows you these struggles and how we deceive ourselves into thinking we have faith.
