Cherie Priest has quickly become one of my favorite writers, mostly because of her Southern Gothic horror stories like _Fathom_ and the Eden Moore trilogy. She writes much other stuff, from the zombies-and-air pirates steampunk of the "Clockwork Century" novels, to the bizarre naturalism of _I Am Princess X_.

_The Family Plot_ is a Southern Gothic horror novel. It begins gently, and builds logically (yes, I said it) to a breathtaking climax, followed by a blackout comedy-horror sketch of an epilog.

The Dutton family business, Music City Salvage, is scraping by on money fumes. The chief, Chuck Dutton, commits them to an all-or-nothing job at the base of Lookout Mountain: the Winthrop estate. There is no doubt that the salvage from this job will bring several times what Chuck scrapes together to pay for it ... if his daughter Dahlia can get her crew to do it all in one week.

As you are doubtless anticipating, Weird Things begin happening at the Winthrop estate. Dahlia, who loves old houses, seems to hear this one talking to her. The crew sees people who aren't and can't be there. They discover a graveyard that isn't really a graveyard, except that it is. And the water seems to be particularly haunted.

Dahlia's crew of four are a brilliantly dysfunctional crew. Dahlia herself is recently divorced, a process which cost her an old house which she, yes, loved. Her cousin Bobby is a bit of a drunkard and a bit of a lazy jerk. Bobby's son Gabe is aware of what a jerk his father can be, but loves him anyway, and loves Dahlia too. And Brad is the outsider of the bunch, a grad student out on his first salvaging job.

Soon the weird things become _bad_ weird things. Dahlia and crew do their best not to do the dumb things people do in horror movies, but the nature of the job, and its urgent necessity, force them to do things they'd rather not; which results in Consequences.

I enjoyed this quite a bit and recommend it as an excellent introduction to Ms. Priest's work.

I am a big fan of Cherie Priest and looked forward to The Family Plot. I love the autumnal setting, the creepy old house and the unique plot revolving around a salvage team dismantling the house before it is razed.

There are quite a few scary set pieces but I thought the ending a bit rushed. I would have enjoyed knowing more about the family that owned the house - one character was never made clear whether she had been a sister/cousin/friend.

Overall a great book to read on cold, dark nights but could have been a bit longer.
As a fan of Cherie Priest's Eden Moore series, this was delightful return to the creepy she excels in as an author. Once I got started, I was hooked, gobbling it up in no time even after telling myself that this would not be a wise bedtime choice. But sure enough, I found myself staying up way too late, wanting to know how it turned out, and also jumping like a scaredy cat at every noise in the house. It's also such a joy to have someone writing strong female characters.

I came back to hoping for a sequel only to find this was released just 2 months ago. Rarely do I ever manage to read something so soon after publication. Now I get to wait for the next like everyone else. But wait I will!
Interesting idea to use an antique salvage company on the brink of bankruptcy as the protagonists. Of course they would run into ghosts with all the ancient abandoned houses they work in! But now they can't stop & run away if things get out of hand or the family business will go bust. Things do get out of hand, of course. Spectacularly so. Cherie Priest does an excellent job setting the mood and building suspense with the relationships between members of the work crew, the wild Tennessee mountain weather (tornadoes even!), and an unfolding story of a young girl's doomed love, tragic end, and the vengeance she now seeks.
While not as good as Cherie Priest's best novels (which would be some of the Clockwork Century series), "The Family Plot" is still good enough to stand head-and-shoulders above most of the novels I've read over the last year. The situation is entirely believable, which is especially important in a horror novel. The characters are well drawn, especially the lead heroine and the malevolent force that opposes her. There are some unique twists that were well developed and had cleverly timed reveals. I recommend this book as a thoroughly entertaining read.
Really disliked this book. Got it when it came out and got half way through and walked away. Only came back to finish recently. Priest is an uneven writer. Loved the 'Eden Moore' books. The 'Clockwork Century' books are uneven some very good but others flat and dull. This one is a classic avenging ghost tale. It has the usual Southern types Priest does so well, but it is very slow and only gets going half way through. The haunting itself is well done, but formula and without giving anything away Imhated the ending. It was like something out of a bad 1970's horror movie. Too many negatives for me to enjoy it.
Cherie Priest writes great characters, and her stories are always imaginative; but she occasionally flubs the endings and this is a classic example of that phenomenon. The characters are great - they're realistic, have great individual personalities, interact realistically, and make you like them with all their failings. The plot starts a bit slow, builds tension so you become completely engaged, works up to a dramatic conclusion... and then tacks on an absolutely stupid Hollywood cheesy hook with no rationale as to why. The kind of cheese that makes you roll your eyes and think the directors did that because they're desperately hoping for a sequel. It really ruined the whole book for me; so if you are the kind of reader that needs the whole experience - characters, plots, beginning, middle, AND end, then you might be equally frustrated.
