Anyone interested in World War II would find this worth their time. The countess is an older woman when she tells her story; a young German woman married to a Hungarian of title and means, caught between the Germans and the Russians at the end of the war. The story of how she survives and provides for her young family by agreeing to become the hostess of a 'guest' house for witnesses of the Nurenberg trial is the stuff of which movies are made. The reader gets another perspective on what is happening in Germany in 1945 and 1946.
The story becomes a little confusing at times, with all of the guests involved and their individual stories, which is my only criticism.

I did not like this book. It was cold and impersonal.
During my father's service at the Nurnberg Trials, this house was only two blocks from where I lived, and I knew nothing about it. The book is extremely well written, fascinating information into the lives of the witnesses, both for the defense and for the prosecution.
