I just finished. I couldn't put it down. Not because it was a thriller, but because I just want to be in the midst of it's words. The writing is indeed lovely. I found it soothing.
The book is written in the voice of the 15 year old main character. Except not exactly, because the words seems more wise, more reflective and more observational than I imagine of a 15 year old. Good, because who would want to suffer through reading the perspective of a self-centered immature brat?
The girl notices details. But the writing gives us the observation itself - how things are seen and how they make her feel. This makes the pace of the narrative feel gentle instead of plodding. But more than that - the writing is like lying on the grass with your hair caressed by a warm breeze. Or the best massage.
It's a good story. Keeps the pages turning. More than details.
Still, the story is essentially about getting to know the characters better. The plot turns reveal the characters instead of bring action. There is action (stuff blows up, there are fights and destruction), but it seems more like the background that allows the characters to develop.
The book appealed to me particularly because I am a father of a 12 year old girl who we are adopting. I liked reading about men raising girls. And all the worry and effort that goes with that (something a 15 year old probably wouldn't actually notice but I'm glad in this book she did). It made me cry, I think because it connected with my own worries and hopes.
Earlier tonight I was about a quarter of the way in and hit the point of not being able to put it down. Six hours later (I read fast) I'm done. It's been awhile since a book did that.
I picked this book up just because it was in the library. Now I'm done I'm surprised to see it doesn't have more fame. It deserves it. I'm grateful to have had it as company.

Troublemakers is a beautifully written character-driven story. The rich multi-layered characters come to life on the pages against a well-developed background. But the pacing is slow in places and unless you’re as invested in the characters as I was this may bother you.
Focusing on the effects of grief and secrets big enough to destroy. On family dynamics and friendships. And at the centre is fifteen-year-old Alena and her family consisting of her older brother Danny and his life partner Nick. I loved that the family unit is not a traditional one, but that aside from the secret (and secrets have a way of getting out!) works really well. In all other respects, Danny and Nick make really good parents and Alena is so lucky to have them.
After reading the story I have no idea why it is called troublemakers. It gives the impression of a mischievous gang causing havoc. But does it portray the story? No, it really doesn’t. It portrays another story, one related but distant. Lena’s story needs her own title.
